What is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy is a hands-on treatment that uses various techniques to manipulate soft tissues like muscles, tendons, and ligaments. It helps reduce pain, improve mobility, promote relaxation, and support overall health and well-being.

Deep tissue massage focuses on relieving chronic tension and targeting deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue, often using more pressure. Relaxation massage, on the other hand, uses gentle, flowing techniques to reduce stress and promote a sense of calm. Both are beneficial, but the choice depends on your needs and preferences.

Your first session with Mishaela begins with a relaxed, 30-minute orthopedic assessment to understand your unique needs and goals. Mishaela’s caring and holistic approach ensures you feel at ease as she learns about your health, lifestyle, and any areas of concern. From there, she creates a personalized treatment plan tailored just for you. Whether you’re seeking relaxation, pain relief, or improved mobility, Mishaela’s thoughtful care and expert guidance will leave you feeling supported, empowered, and on the path to lasting wellness.

For your first appointment, please arrive about 10-15 minutes early. This gives you time to complete any necessary forms, settle in, and relax before your initial assessment and treatment begin.

Massage therapy is generally not painful, but certain techniques, like deep tissue massage, may involve firm pressure that can feel intense, especially on tight or sore muscles. Mishaela prioritizes your comfort and encourages open communication during your session to adjust pressure as needed.

It’s normal to feel some mild soreness or tenderness after a massage, particularly if deep work was done. This is a sign that your muscles are releasing tension and healing. Staying hydrated and following any self-care tips provided by Mishaela can help reduce post-massage soreness.

Sharing your medical conditions and health history helps your massage therapist provide safe and effective care tailored to your needs. Certain health conditions or medications may affect how your body responds to massage, and understanding your history allows the therapist to adjust techniques or avoid areas that could cause harm. This ensures a personalized treatment that supports your well-being and aligns with your health goals.

You only need to remove as much clothing as you’re comfortable with. Mishaela uses professional draping techniques to ensure your privacy and keep you covered throughout the session, only exposing the area being worked on. Feel free to communicate your comfort level so you can fully relax and enjoy your treatment.

Preparing for your massage is simple! Stay hydrated, avoid eating a heavy meal right before your session, and wear comfortable clothing that’s easy to change in and out of. Arrive a few minutes early to relax and complete any paperwork. Most importantly, come ready to communicate your goals, preferences, and any areas of concern so your treatment can be tailored to your needs.

Massage therapy is not covered under Alberta Health Care. However, many extended health insurance plans include coverage for massage therapy provided by a registered massage therapist. Check with your insurance provider to confirm your coverage and any specific requirements, such as a doctor’s referral.

You don’t need a doctor’s referral to receive massage therapy. However, some insurance plans require a referral for reimbursement. If you’re using insurance, check your policy to see if a referral is necessary.

Harmony Massage offers flexible payment options to make your experience as convenient as possible. We accept cash, debit, and all major credit cards. E-transfer payments are also welcome. While we strive to accommodate most payment methods, we do not accept cheques. If you have any questions about payment, feel free to ask before your appointment.

The coverage amount for massage therapy through your extended benefits plan varies depending on your specific insurance provider and policy. Many plans cover a portion of the cost per session, often up to a set amount per year. It’s best to check with your insurance provider directly to understand your coverage limits, co-pays, and any requirements such as a doctor’s referral.

Massage therapy can help treat a wide range of conditions, including muscle tension, chronic pain, stress, headaches, and sports injuries. It can also improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and enhance flexibility. By targeting muscles, tendons, and connective tissue, massage promotes relaxation, relieves pain, and supports overall well-being. Whether you’re looking to reduce stress, recover from an injury, or simply improve your health, massage therapy can be a valuable tool to help you feel better physically and mentally.

Most people can safely receive a massage, but there are certain conditions where massage may need to be adjusted or avoided. It’s important to share any health concerns or medical conditions with your therapist, so they can tailor the treatment to suit your needs. Pregnant individuals, those with certain injuries, skin conditions, or heart issues may need modifications to their massage. Your therapist will guide you and ensure that your treatment is safe and effective based on your individual health.

Yes, you can receive a massage if you’re in pain, but it’s important to communicate your level of discomfort with your therapist. Massage can help alleviate pain by relaxing tight muscles, improving circulation, and reducing inflammation. However, if the pain is caused by an injury or medical condition, your therapist may adjust the techniques to ensure your comfort and avoid further strain. If you’re dealing with severe or acute pain, it’s a good idea to consult with a healthcare provider before getting a massage to ensure it’s the right approach for your situation.

The frequency of your massage sessions depends on your personal goals, lifestyle, and any specific health concerns. For general relaxation and stress relief, a monthly massage is often recommended. If you’re dealing with chronic pain, muscle tension, or recovering from an injury, more frequent sessions—such as weekly or bi-weekly—may be beneficial. Your therapist can help determine the best schedule for you based on your needs and progress. Regular sessions can support overall wellness, enhance flexibility, and reduce stress over time.

The length of your massage depends on your goals and available time. A typical session lasts between 60 to 90 minutes, providing enough time for a thorough treatment. If you’re looking for focused relief on specific areas or simply need a quick relaxation session, a 30-minute massage may be sufficient. For more comprehensive treatment, a 60-minute or 90-minute session allows your therapist to address multiple areas and provide deeper relaxation. Your therapist can help guide you on the ideal duration based on your needs.

While a single massage can provide temporary relief and relaxation, lasting benefits often require multiple sessions. The frequency of treatments depends on your specific needs, such as pain management, stress reduction, or muscle tension. For chronic conditions or long-term wellness, regular sessions are recommended to maintain progress and prevent reoccurring issues. Your therapist can help assess your progress and recommend a treatment plan that works best for you.
